In First for Court, Woman Is Ruled Eligible for Asylum in U.S. on Basis of Domestic Abuse


The ruling could slow the pace of deportations because it creates new legal grounds for women from Central America caught entering the country illegally in their fight to stay.

The ruling technically affects only Guatemalan women, but the woman’s lawyer and other immigration advocates said the decision could open the door to asylum claims for women from other countries.
